    He gave up the pitch for Ted Williams' longest career home run at 502 ft. at Fenway Park (1946).
    He allowed 32 home runs during the 1948 season.
    He allowed the Reds' 4th run by giving up a home run during Game 6 of the 1940 World Series.
    He was fired twice as a major league manager.

    He served as a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
    He recorded over 10 wins in six consecutive seasons after he returned from military service (1946-1951).
    He managed the Reds to their first World Series appearance in 21 years (1961).
    He was forced to retire from managing due to declining health.
    He died of lung cancer 3 months after his 45th birthday.
    He was selected as Seattle's Athlete of the 20th Century by the Seattle Post-Intelligencer (December 24, 1999).
    The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington is named and dedicated in his honor.
