Why he might be annoying
He succeeded Queen Elizabeth I, a tough act to follow.
He was the sixth King James of Scotland and the first King James of England, which is why his title was so confusing.
His mother and his son were both executed by the English government.
He was the victim of an assassination attempt--the Gunpowder Plot--in which some English Catholics tried to blow up Parliament.
One of James' would-be assassins, Guy Fawkes, has a holiday named after him.
Why he might not be annoying
He was anti-smoking.
He commissioned a new edition of the Bible, today known as the King James version.
He became King of Scotland when he was only 13 months old.
He was the first Stuart King of England.
