    The Germans laid siege to it during WW II killing 800,000 out of 3 million denizens.
    It gets really cold due to its closeness to the Arctic Circle.
    Vladimir Putin was born here.
    It is Russia's major cultural center.
    It is Russia's only seaport open to European trade.
    For its heroic tenacity during WW II, it was given the title 'Hero City.'
    Peter the Great named it after his patron apostle Saint Peter.
    It went back to Saint Petersburg after the fall of Communism (1991).
    John Quincy Adams was the first US ambassador to Saint Petersburg.
    Rasputin was murdered here (1916).
