Premise: Four teens and a talking dog solve mysteries
Why Scooby-Doo might be annoying
It inflicted Scrappy-Doo on the world.
Hanna-Barbera endlessly cloned its 'a group of teens and a talking fill-in-the-blank' formula. ('Speed Buggy': three teens and talking car; 'Jabberjaws': four teens and a talking shark; etc.)
Casey Kasem, a vegetarian, stopped providing Shaggy's voice to protest he and Scooby being used in a Burger King commercial.
Despite being a commercial success for over three decades, it has been nominated for only two Daytime Emmys.
TV critic Jamie Malanowski commented, 'Its mysteries are not very mysterious, and the humor is hardly humorous. As for the animation -- well, the drawings on your refrigerator may give it competition.'
Why Scooby-Doo might not be annoying
It was a successful response to complaints about gratuitous violence in Saturday morning cartoons.
It produced the catchphrases 'Zoinks,' 'Jinkies,' and 'I would have gotten away with it if it wasn't for you meddling kids.'
It inspired fan speculation about the ingredients of Scooby Snacks and what Fred and Daphne got up to while the other three looked for clues.
It became a pop culture touchstone, referenced or parodied by Buffy the Vampire-Slayer, Wayne's World, South Park and Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, among others.
Carl Sagan admired its skepticism towards the supernatural and felt an adult equivalent would be a public service.
