The Resume

Why Hollywood Squares might be annoying:

Huge egoed celebrities hog camera time which slows down the game.
Celebrities were given bluffs (wrong answers that are humorous) prior to the show.
The last show of the original Hollywood Squares aired exactly 20 years before the September 11th attack.
It gave us such phrases as 'I'll take Alf to block' and 'X gets the Square.'
To make the show hip in the 4th edition, they called it H2.
They tend to give effeminate actors work, like Paul Lynde and Bruce Vilanch.
The final three series combined, were not as successful as the first one.
The talentless Zsa Zsa Gabor was a semi regular on the New Hollywood Squares and insisted on being called Princess Zsa Zsa.
On one episode each contestant was tied with four squares and needed one to win. That square was occupied by Gilbert Gottfried and it took nearly 10 questions before someone got it correct and won.
The pilot was hosted by Bert Parks, he didn't get the gig and the pilot was not televised (April 21, 1965).
Many think of Paul Lynde as the perennial center square, but Ernest Borgnine was the first center square.
During a show, Jack Palance fell asleep and had to be waken.
They taped five shows in a single day, and Dom DeLuise was too obese to keep using the stairs to his square. They wrapped a curtain around his square between each show so he could change out of view of the studio audience.
Peter Marshall hated Dan Rowan, that although most Laugh-In stars were invited on the show, Dan Rowan was not.
They experimented one week with hour long shows, it was not well received.

Why Hollywood Squares might not be annoying:

It had four incarnations on TV.
They coined the word 'zinger,' meaning one-line punchlines.
It became so cool that rockers like Alice Cooper and shock jock Howard Stern actually requested to be on the show.
Rose Marie was the only square to appear on the first and last show of the original series.
Greta Garbo was a fan of the show and sent Paul Lynde a fan letter
Sometimes a square would contain a duo or even a trio. More celebrities for the viewer.
Andy Kaufman appeared on the show in which a massive amount viewers complained he was disrespectful to host Peter Marshall. Marshall thought he was funny and had no problem with him.
It spun off a Saturday Morning kids version 'The Storybook Squares.'
