Selected for NASA's astronaut program (January 1978)
Commander of the Space Shuttle Challenger Flight STS-51-L (25th of the Space Shuttle program)
Died at age 46 (along with five mission and payload specialists and school teacher Christa McAuliffe) when Challenger blew up 73.5 seconds after takeoff
Buried in Arlington National Cemetery

Why he might be annoying:

He had previously piloted a Challenger mission without incident (April 1984).
He never questioned the many flight delays of the ill-fated mission.
He knowingly took a dangerous job that cost him life and his two kids their father.
Though he had many successful flights, logging more than 6,500 hours flying in 45 types of aircraft, he will forever be known has the commander of the Challenger Disaster.

Why he might not be annoying:

He received a B.S. degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Arizona (1965).
He was a Vietnam War vet.
He was an instructor pilot for the NASA/Boeing 747 shuttle carrier airplane.
While he was alive he earned the Air Force Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, and two NASA Exceptional Service Medals.
After his death he was posthumously awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor, the Purple Heart medal and was inducted into the Astronaut Hall of Fame.
Auburn Municipal Airport in Washington was re-named Dick Scobee Field and North Auburn Elementary School was re-named Dick Scobee Elementary School in his honor.
