Attorney

The Resume

    (April 17, 1914- )
    Born in Charlotte, North Carolina
    Civil Rights Attorney
    Based in Washington, D.C.
    Protegee of Mary MacLeod Bethune

Why she might be annoying:

She forfeited a medical career to teach school.
She left teaching to join the military, joining the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps (WAACs) in 1941.
She eventually decided to become a defense lawyer.

Why she might not be annoying:

In Miami in 1943, she was kicked off a bus so her seat could be given to a white Marine.
When a similar incident happened to another Army woman, Sarah Keys, in 1952, she took the case, challenging the Jim Crow laws under the Intestate Commerce Act.
This case effectively ended segregation in travel.
She successfully defended the black man accused of murdering JFK mistress Mary Pinchot Meyer, alluding that a hired hit man was the actual culprit.
She was the first black woman admitted to the Women's Bar Association of D.C. despite protestations from several members.
In 2009, First Lady Michelle Obama saluted her accomplishments.
