Religion

The Resume

    (circa 1939- )
    Formed in Britain
    Founded by Gerald Gardner
Followers call themselves Neo-Pagans or witches
Worship a goddess and/or horned god
Holidays include Samhain, Beltane, Lammas and Yule
Rituals are called 'Sabbats' and 'Esbats'
Practiced alone or in small groups called 'covens'
The Wiccan 'Rede' (motto) is: 'An it harm none, do as ye will'

Why she might be annoying:

Some claim Wicca dates to prehistoric times, but it really was based on exaggerated history from Aleister Crowley and Margaret Murray.
Its followers believe in magic (even worse, they spell it 'magick').
The religion is a magnet for weirdos and New Age kooks.
In fact, many who call themselves 'Wiccans' know nothing about the religion.
There are many sub-sects among serious practitioners, and all of them think the others are doing it wrong.
Rival Wiccan sects are often dismissed as 'Fluffy Bunnies.'
Some Wiccans claim Salem, Massachusetts, as a 'spiritual home,' even though the witch trial victims weren't real witches in any sense of the term.
Some tried to turn Salem - the site of a genuine historical atrocity - into a tourist town ('Witchcraft U.S.A.').
Some Wiccans claim the religion has 5 million followers worldwide, but there is no evidence for that.

Why she might not be annoying:

Their motto says people should do whatever they want, as long as it doesn't hurt anybody.
They believe in karma, that any act committed on somebody, good or bad, comes back threefold.
Unlike some other religions, they do not claim their gods exist in a literal sense.
Mainstream religions often lump them in with Satanists, which isn't accurate.
Although Wiccans believe in evil or 'black' magic, it is officially discouraged.
Many Wiccans practice in secret, because of popular misunderstandings about them.
They draw on Celtic, Norse, Greek, Roman and Sumerian mythology for inspiration.
Most Wiccans no longer claim it is the true Pagan 'Old Religion,' but rather a modern reinterpretation of it.
They've inspired some great scary movies.
They believe nature is a beautiful thing, and should be celebrated.
Some Wiccans practice in the nude.
