Why he might be annoying:

As a military intelligence officer, he disguised himself as an Indian to go underground and infiltrate the independence movement.
He was rejected for the 1936 Everest Expedition.
He was a last-minute replacement for Eric Shipton as head of the 1953 Everest Expedition, which was resented by many of the climbers.
He was overshadowed by Edmund Hillary, who led the final assault on the summit.
During the controversy over whether Hillary or Sherpa Tenzig Norgay had been the first to reach the top of Everest, he trashed Norgay, saying 'Tenzig was nothing at all, merely a simple aide.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He began climbing mountains in the Himilayas as a teen.
He was married to Joy Mowbray-Green for 62 years until his death.
He received the Distinguished Service Order for his service in the Italian campaign during WWII, including personally leading reconnaissance patrols behind enemy lines.
Although Edmund Hillary was initially opposed to his leading the 1953 Everest Expedition, he later praised Hunt as 'an extremely competent leader, and he had a very delightful personality.'
Unlike many climbs on Everest, no one died, was seriously injured, or even suffered frostbite during the 1953 expedition.
He served as a personal advisor to Prime Minister Harold Wilson on the Biafran War in Nigeria and directed British relief missions to that country.
