Why Springfield, Massachusetts might be annoying:

Its population has been stuck between 150-175 thousand (mostly the lower end) since the 1930's.
It has a high crime rate for a relatively small city.
It is second fiddle to Boston in Massachusetts.
The city suffered a lot of damage from two huge floods that wiped out parts of their north and south ends (1936 and 1938).
It is a city notorious for violent crime, and Smith & Wesson is headquartered there!

Why Springfield, Massachusetts might not be annoying:

It is the city where basketball was invented.
Milton Bradley, Goodyear Tires and Good Housekeeping Magazine were all founded there.
The largest amusement park in New England, Six Flags New England, is located in one of its suburbs.
It has a great music scene, with musicians as diverse as Staind, Linda Perry, Taj Mahal and Killswitch Engage starting out there.
It did not suffer as badly as other cities did in the post-industrial era.
