    From 2004 until his death, he endorsed a few candidates who lost in presidential elections such as John Kerry and briefly John McCain.
    He attended Yale University.
    He served in World War II with the U.S. Army Air Force.
    He signed the Michigan Wetlands Protection Act and the Michigan Environmental Protection Act into law to protect the environment.
    He played a key role in developing the Council of Great Lakes Governors.
    He supported same-sex marriage.
    He is longest serving governor in the history of Michigan with 14 years in office.
    A state park in Detroit, Michigan, is named in his honor.
    He was married to his wife Helen Milliken for over 65 years until her death.
