Why she might be annoying:

While working as a hotel switchboard operator, she eavesdropped on the residents, including Tennessee Williams (who, she complained, never said anything interesting).
Her first short story was rejected 40 times over a six-year period before being published.
Shortly after that story sold, she gave birth to her fourth child, who she named Carol after the heroine in the story.
To make ends meet, she encouraged her five children to take jobs modeling and acting.
    She believes in ESP.

Why she might not be annoying:

After her father died when she was twelve, she had to move out of her bedroom so her mother could rent it out.
While working as a secretary for an ad agency, she modeled for company brochures alongside a then-unknown Grace Kelly.
Her first suspense novel, 'Where Are the Children,' has gone through 75 printings.
Her honors include being named a Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters by France, a Dame of the Order of St. Gregory the Great by the Catholic Church and president of the Mystery Writers of America.
