Why he might be annoying:

    He originally did not want to play golf at the professional level.
    Prior to starting his pro golf career, he tried and failed to secure a job in financial services during the Great Depression.
    He lost in match play in his first PGA Championship appearance (1935).
    Following his only U.S. Open victory, he never won another major championship.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He was one of the founders of the University of Pittsburgh's golf team.
    He overcame nasty weather conditions during 1935 U.S. Open by using his knowledge of the Oakmont Country Club course, becoming the only player that year to break 300.
    The stimpmeter (a device for measuring the speed of golf course greens) was inspired by the fast greens during his only U.S. Open victory.
    He competed in the Ryder Cup that marked the first time where a U.S. Open Champion competed against a British Open champion.
    He was competed in the very first Masters Tournament.
