The Resume

    (circa 2613 BC-642)
Greek name for the ancient Egyptian city Shedyet
Located on the Nile’s western bank about 60 miles from modern Cairo
Most important center of worship for the crocodile god Sobek
Part of modern Fayyum and currently known as Medinet El-Fayuum

Why he might be annoying:

It sounds like a made-up place.
There are few remains from its ancient years.
It is better known by its irreverent Greek name than its ancient Egyptian one.
It was never a significant political center.
It was home to a pampered crocodile stand-in for Sobek named Petsuchos (son of Sobek).
Petsuchos had his own temple, was decorated with jewels and fed honey-cakes by his own priests.

Why he might not be annoying:

Petsuchos was not sacrificed but allowed to live out his days (after which he was mummified and replaced by another crocodile).
It was renamed ‘Arsinoe’ by a Ptolemaic ruler in honor of his wife.
It became an important Christian city during Roman times.
Several important papyrus manuscripts were discovered here in 1887.
It is the namesake of a dungeon in the game ‘Dragon Quest.’
