Why Whittier, Alaska might be annoying:

It is incredibly isolated from the rest of the country.
It is known for the town’s entire population living in one 14 story apartment complex.
It shares its name with the community in California.
It has both the wettest climate during the summer, along with the harshest winter conditions in the continent.
It sustained over $10 million in damage in the Good Friday Earthquake, which was considered one of the largest measured earthquakes in American history (March 27, 1964).
It allowed the town’s other main structure, the Buckner Building fall into significant disrepair, after it was vacated by the United States Army.
Vehicular access to the town was restricted, prior to the opening of the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel in 2000.

Why Whittier, Alaska might not be annoying:

It has some stunning views, due to its location along Prince William Sound.
It was originally a portage route during the Klondike Gold Rush.
The U.S. Army’s Camp Sullivan base was established here during World War II.
The Portage Glacier Highway leading out of the community was the first vehicular accessible road to both Anchorage and inner-Alaska.
The reason the town’s population and services are based out of Begich Towers is to ensure residents don’t have to venture outdoors during the city’s notoriously inclement conditions.
It is located along the Chugach National Forest, which is considered the second largest national forest in the United States.
