    Born in North Terre Haute, Indiana
    Science fiction author most well-known for his Riverworld and World of Tiers series
    Three time winner of the Hugo Award
    Has written fictional biographies of Tarzan and Doc Savage

Why he might be annoying:

    He washed out of flight school during WWII.
    It took him 13 years off and on to get his college degree, a BA in English from Bradley.
    Editor John W. Campbell rejected his first sci-fi story, The Lovers, saying it nauseated him. It later won Farmer his first Hugo award.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He has had an enormous amount of trouble with editors and publishers during his career. At last count he was on his 27th publisher!
    He had to work full-time for most of his adult life.
    He frequently works other authors' characters into his novels (or writes whole novels about other authors' characters) and sometimes uses other authors' characters' names as pen names.
    Between his novels and short stories collections, he has had over 100 books published!
    He has won three Hugo Awards in three different categories: Most Promising New Talent, Best Novella, and Best Novel.
