U.S. Vice President
    (October 23, 1835-June 14, 1914)
    (October 23, 1835–June 14, 1914)
    Admitted to the bar (1858)
Supported Stephen Douglas against Abraham Lincoln (1858)
    Elected district attorney (1864-1868)
Member of the House of Representatives (1874-1876, 1874-1880)
Assistant Postmaster General under Grover Cleveland
Vice President during Cleveland's second term (1893-1897)
He gained his reputation as a partisan when he worked as the Assistant Postmaster General.
One Republican described Stevenson as, 'an official axman who beheaded Republican officeholders with the precision and dispatch of the French guillotine in the days of the Revolution.'
He replaced 40,000 fourth-class postmaster Republicans in the postal service.
He was selected as VP to balance the Cleveland ticket based upon his support of currency reform and free-silver and Cleveland's support of the gold standard.
Cleveland kept his mouth cancer surgery a secret, fearing a potential market crash on Wall Street from panic over Stevenson possibly becoming president.
He was overshadowed by his grandson, Adlai E. Stevenson.
He was one of the few who enjoyed his term as vice president.
Despite his reputation gained from his days working for the postal service, he was known in later years to be a dignified, nonpartisan politician.
He had a strong sense of humor.
Though his grandson ran for president twice against Dwight Eisenhower, he came closer to actually becoming president during Cleveland's risky cancer surgery.
