Why he might be annoying:

    He had a life-long hatred of his father, leaving home after a physical confrontation between the two.
    Some of his more dated electronic works sound like the special effects from a B-movie.
    He started several projects without finishing.
    His surviving works total only three hours.
    He destroyed some of his works during fits of depression.

Why he might not be annoying:

    Scores for many of his early works were destroyed in a warehouse fire.
    He said of his critics, 'To stubbornly conditioned ears, anything new in music has always been called noise.'
    Henry Miller called him 'the stratospheric colossus of sound.'
    His fans include Frank Zappa, whose 15th birthday present was being allowed to place a call to Varese, and Robert Lamm of Chicago, who wrote a song called 'A Hit by Varese.'
