Why he might be annoying:

He was a spendthrift who was constantly in debt.
While serving as ambassador to Venice for the exiled Stuarts, he was expelled from the city for 'venal conduct.'
His comedy 'The Parson's Wedding' was called 'an obscene, loose play' by Samuel Pepys.

Why he might not be annoying:

As a teenaged page in the court of Charles I, he volunteered as an extra at the Red Bull Theater so he could see plays for free.
As director of the King's Company, he was credited with introducing to the English stage scenery, music and female actors (including a pair of all-women productions of 'The Parson's Wedding' that created a sensation).
Charles II admired his wit enough to grant him license to mock anyone at court without penalty.
