Radio Personality

The Resume

    (April 16, 1915-May 21, 2009)
    Born in St. Paul, Minnesota
    Birth name was Louise Abras
Provided the voice of Lois Lane for radio's 'The Adventures of Superman' (1940-51), a series of animated Fleischer/Paramount shorts (1941-43) and the animated TV series 'The New Adventures of Superman' (1966)
Also provided the voice of Della Street on radio's 'Perry Mason'
Panelist on the TV game show 'The Name's The Same' (1951-55)

Why she might be annoying:

Her family said they did not know why she chose Alexander as a last name.
She also kept secret a marriage to actor John Sylvester White, with her daughter saying 'Until about two years ago, I didn't even know there was a first husband.'
The marriage with White and a second marriage to surgeon Robert Crowley both ended in divorce.
She talked her way into an early stage role by convincing the producer that she could use her family's garment district connections to score free costumes.

Why she might not be annoying:

She chose her first name in honor of actress Joan Crawford.
She and her third husband, Volkswagen importer Arthur Stanton, were known for holding lavish parties at their homes in New York and the Hamptons.
At one party, George Plimpton proposed to his wife; at another, for their daughter's 21st birthday, Leonard Bernstein played 'Happy Birthday.'
Bud Collyer, who portrayed Superman, said 'Joan is one of those rare actresses - especially in radio, where you can't be seen and have to depend entirely on your voice - who can go in on something cold and her instincts are so right as an actress that even without a rehearsal or read-through she is right.'
