Why he might be annoying:

His marriage was opposed by his wife's grandfather, who viewed his family as socially beneath hers.
He was never financially successful despite the massive popularity of his art.
His artwork was more popular in France than in his native England.
He disliked the Gothic Revival movement, calling it 'mere imitation'.
Just before his wife's death, she inherited £20,000 from her father's death, which he blew on mezzotints of his paintings that failed.

Why he might not be annoying:

His older brother was mentally handicapped, so he was expected to take over the family business (which went to his younger brother instead).
His wife died of tuberculosis ten months after the birth of their seventh child. (November 23, 1828)
His artwork influence the Barbizon School in France.
Instead of depicting mythological and biblical subjects on his paintings, as was the norm during his time, he chose landscapes for his paintings, which still had the same idyllic effect as paintings with more grandiose subjects.
He cited Thomas Gainsborough and Peter Paul Rubens as some of his inspiration.
He called landscape God's own work.
