    He was nicknamed 'the Orchid Man.'
    He turned pro at age 14.
    He held the unofficial title of 'White Heavyweight Champion of the World' while Jack Johnson held the real world title (1914-15).

    He was an aviator in World War I and earned the Croix de Guerre.
    His title fight against Jack Dempsey was boxing's first million-dollar gate (July 2, 1921).
    After leaving the ring, he opened a chic Paris bistro.
    He became good friends with Dempsey (who had also become a restaurateur post-boxing).
