    Plane disappeared over the Mediterranean

Why he might be annoying:

    He failed his final exams at prep school.
    He gave up flying for several years when his fiancee's family objected, but he later called off the engagement.
    He named his mistress as his literary executor.
    Although a bracelet he wore (1998) and his plane (2000) were eventually recovered, his body was never found.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He and his navigator survived a crash in the Sahara (December 30, 1935), during which they became so dehydrated they had stopped sweating by the time of their rescue.
    He disappeared while flying a reconnaissance mission for the Free French.
    He was pictured on the 50-franc note.
    'Wind, Sand and Stars' was named the best adventure book of all time by Outside magazine.
    Fans of 'The Little Prince' ranged from James Dean to Mr. Rogers.
