He suffered from post traumatic stress and survivor guilt.
He didn't finished college.

Why he might not be annoying:

A maintenance error failed to spot the defect from no. 2 engine of his DC-10 aircraft and suffered an uncontained failure during flight.
Shrapnel from #2 engine ripped the hydraulic system rendering his aircraft uncontrollable.
He remained calm and handled the emergency situation professionally.
He and his crew managed to save more lives even though the aircraft was badly crippled.
