    Novelist, journalist and poet
    Appointed assistant librarian for the French Senate (1876)
    Literary critic for 'Le Temps'
    Wrote the novels 'The Crime of Sylvestre Bonnard' (1881), 'Thais' (1890), 'Mother of Pearl' (1892), 'The Opinions of Jerome Cognard' (1893), 'Monsieur Bergeret in Paris' (1901), 'Penguin Island' (1908), 'The Gods Are Athirst' (1912) and 'The Revolt of the Angels' (1914)
    Poetry collections include 'Poems Dores' (1873) and 'The Bride of Corinth' (1876)
    Won the Nobel Prize for Literature (1921)

Why he might be annoying:

    He often claimed his father was a doctor, when he was actually a bookseller.
    He twice failed his college entrance exams.
    During an argument with his wife over his adultery, he stormed out of the house in his nightgown and never returned.
    Although he never joined the French Communist Party, he contributed financially to it and on the fifth anniversary of the Russian Revolution wrote that the Soviet Union was the first government 'of the people, by the people.'
    When he received the Nobel Prize, he slept through the award ceremony.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He signed Emile Zola's manifesto supporting Alfred Dreyfus.
    He became disillusioned with Communism following a purge of the French Communist Party (1923).
    He was awarded the Legion of Honor.
    At his death, 'Time' described him as 'perhaps the best-known and most highly respected literary artist in the world.'
    He wrote, 'In its majestic equality, the law forbids rich and poor alike to sleep under bridges, beg in the streets and steal loaves of bread.'
