He was occasionally credited in films and public appearances as 'Dick Long.'
This resulted in news headlines over the years such as: 'Mara Corday becomes bride of Dick Long' (get it out of the gutter...)
His career as a leading man dried up in the mid-1950s, prompting him to wisely shift to the medium of television.
He was arrested after his second wife falsely accused him of trying to kill her in a drunken rage - she later dropped all charges (1961).
He was good friends with Clint Eastwood.
He served in the U.S. Army for two years during the Korean War.
He was discovered by accident by a talent scout in a play while a student at Hollywood High School.
His debut film had him play opposite Orson Welles and Claudette Colbert.
His marriage to actress Suzan Ball (Lucille's cousin) ended in tragedy after she was diagnosed with cancer. She died barely a year into their marriage.
He struggled with cardiac problems throughout his life, and died after experiencing multiple heart attacks.
He is fondly remembered by 'Big Valley' fans for his role as Barbara Stanwyck's eldest son, who was also an attorney.
