The Resume

Why he might be annoying:

He was the centre of a rift between Don Sutton and Steve Garvey, after Sutton publicly stated Smith was more valuable to the team then Garvey was.
He infamously jumped into the stands at Candlestick Park and attacked a fan who was taunting him.
He publicly criticized the Yankee fans, going as far as saying that taxpayer money should be better spent educating them, instead of going towards the soldiers in Middle East conflict.
He once claimed that 'potential' was one of the worst words used in the English language, when asked about why he wasn't playing up to his abilities.
He was described as being moody by former teammates and pundits alike.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was described as having the strongest throwing arm by players and pundits alike.
He had a strong work ethic, and always strived to improve all elements of his game.
He sacrificed going to college by pursuing his baseball career in order to help provide for his ailing father.
He was one of the first African-American stars to play for the Red Sox.
Despite not being as well known as Reggie Jackson, many baseball pundits prefered his game and style of play, citing they weren't overly fond of Jackson's showmanship.
