    Born in New York City, New York
    Best known as the author of ‘A Visit from Saint Nicholas’ (1823)
    Professor of Oriental and Greek Literature at Columbia University

Why he might be annoying:

    His famous Christmas poem is usually miscalled ‘Twas the Night before Christmas.’
    He denied having written the poem for years, considering it too frivolous a work for a learned man such as himself.
    His authorship of ‘A Visit from Saint Nicholas’ has been disputed.
    He was against the abolition of slavery and owned several slaves.
    He based his Christmas poem on Dutch customs he knew little about.
    He used his chubby Dutch neighbor as a model for 'Saint Nick.'

Why he might not be annoying:

    He finally acknowledged authorship of ‘A Visit from Saint Nicholas’ to please his children.
    His poem made Saint Nicholas or Santa Claus a Christmas tradition worldwide.
    He wrote a highly respected English/Hebrew dictionary.
    He served on the board of the New York Institution for the Blind for ten years.
    There is an annual reading of ‘A Visit from Saint Nicholas’ at Manhattan’s Clement Clarke Moore Park.
