Why he might be annoying:

His most famous book ‘Under the Volcano' is about a 12 hour bender.
He played the ukulele.
As an adult he received a monthly allowance from his rich father.
In Spain he was nicknamed ‘el borracho Ingles' (the English drunkard).
He and his second wife lived as squatters on a beach in British Columbia in the 1940's.
He was deported from Mexico in 1946 (possibly because he hadn't paid a bribe on an earlier visit).
He more or less drank himself to death.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was athletic and excelled at golf and swimming.
He worked as a deckhand after finishing school.
At twenty, he impressed author Conrad Aiken so much Aiken became his mentor.
Despite his alcoholism, he could stop drinking for several days to write and edit.
His second wife Margerie Bonner acted in several silent movies.
His house burned down in 1944, and a 2000 page manuscript was lost.
The city of Vancouver (that had once tried to evict him) dedicated a park to him in 1987.
‘Under the Volcano' is considered a key twentieth century novel.
