The Resume

    (February 21, 1801-August 11, 1890)
    Born in London, United Kingdom
Anglican priest who joined and led many other Anglican priests and laypersons to join the Roman Catholic Church
Author of Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine, Apologia Pro Vita Sua, The Idea of a University and many other philosophical, theological and fictional works
    Founder of the Oxford Movement
    Graduate of Trinity College
Founded Catholic University of Ireland, now known as College University of Dublin

Why he might be annoying:

He became a Calvinist in his youth but still became an Anglican priest as an adult.
He published a series of tracts that still inspire evangelists to this day to bug people with those dumb little comic books.
He spent almost the entirety of his last forty years of life teaching at Edgbaston.
He suffered a nervous breakdown from worry over his grades in college and as a result graduated with poor grades and only third-class honors.
He was a poor administrator and resigned from his post at the Catholic University of Ireland because of that.

Why he might not be annoying:

He founded the Oxford Movement which was devoted to demonstrating that the Church of England, founded by Henry the VIII, was a legitimate wing of the One True Church along with Eastern Orthodoxy and Roman Catholicism and that it provided a 'middle way' between Protestantism and Catholicism. Instead Newman and others became convinced that the Catholic Church was the true Church and ended up joining it.
Many of the Anglican priests who supported the Oxford Movement (but who remained in the Church of England) were cut off financially by their bishops and had to move into poorer neighborhoods which led to a greater awareness of the need for social justice in the Church of England and thereby inspired help for the poor.
His family suffered a severe financial crisis when he was in his teens and he almost had to leave college because of it.
He believed that you had to have an inner conviction of the existence of God before you could believe in the Bible, Church, sacraments, etc.
His motto as cardinal was 'Cor ar cor loquitor' which translates as 'Heart speaks to heart.'
    He was an excellent poet.
