Why he might be annoying:

Like J.K. Rowling's 'Harry Potter' books, his 'His Dark Materials' trilogy has drawn controversy from fundamentalist Christian groups.
He is accused of pursuing an anti-Christian agenda based on his atheism and his written works.
He wrote an essay called 'The Darkside of Narnia' in which he calls C.S. Lewis's 'The Chronicles of Narnia' series propaganda.
In public forums, he also blasts C.S. Lewis and his 'Chronicles of Narnia' books as racist, disparaging of girls and women, and relished in violence.
One of his favorite hobbies is no exercise.
At the Edinburgh International Books Festival, he criticizes modern fiction as 'becoming trivial and worthless.'

Why he might not be annoying:

    He attended Exeter College, Oxford.
He teaches master level courses in English at Exeter College.
Ironically, his 'His Dark Materials' series resemble 'The Chronicles of Narnia' series in many ways (i.e. young girl hiding in a wardrobe, talking animals, etc.).
His attacks on religion, especially Christianity, are focused on the constraints of dogmatism and oppression using religion, not religion itself.
His book 'The Amber Spyglass' was the first children's book to win Whitbread Book of the Year.
His 'His Dark Materials' books are ranked 3rd place in the BBC's Big Read poll (2003).
