Why he might be annoying:

Several of his poems are misogynistic.
He allegedly fell in love with Prince Albert Victor, son of the Prince of Wales, while tutoring him at Cambridge.
He starved himself to death while committed to a mental asylum.
He was accused of being Jack the Ripper.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was elected president of the Cambridge Union debating society.
He was struck on the head by the sail of a windmill (1886), which may have led to his later mental problems.
Several investigators dismiss him as a Ripper suspect on the grounds that he would not have had enough time to return to Cambridge to deliver lectures the mornings after the murders.
