He was a loner who usually had an adversarial relationship with the other players on the pro circuit.
He was married and divorced five times.
Fellow tennis player Pancho Segura said, 'The nicest thing [Gonzales] ever says to his wives is, 'Shut up.'
He died broke and his funeral had to be paid for by ex-brother-in-law Andre Agassi.

He taught himself tennis watching other players on the public courts in Los Angeles.
Sports Illustrated claimed, 'If earth was on the line in a tennis match, the man you want serving to save mankind would be Ricardo Alonso Gonzalez.'
At age 41, he won the longest match in Wimbledon history, a 22-24, 1-6, 16-14, 6-3, 11-9 marathon that lasted 5 hours 12 minutes.
He was the first player inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame while still active.
Howard Cosell said, 'Next to Jackie Robinson, Pancho Gonzales was the most competitive athlete I've ever known.'
