His nickname was ‘Cangurito.’
He didn’t take up playing shortstop until his early 20’s, when he filled in as an injury replacement.
His eagerness to make plays earned him a reputation of overrunning grounders.
His tenure with the Yankees is remembered for him tearing a ligament in his knee in an on-field collision (1964).
His play dropped off substantially to the point where he was relegated to a bench role by the end of his career.

He and his father, Santos are the first father an son duo to be inducted into the Mexican Baseball Hall of Fame.
He was the second Phillie shortstop in franchise history to win a Gold Glove Award.

He was one of the first high-profile athletes to speak out against a potential participation of the apartheid South African team competing at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City.
He was considered one of baseball’s true gentlemen from both teammates and pundits alike.
