Why he might be annoying:

    His academic writings tend to be excruciatingly dry and technical.
    The Father Dowling mysteries, about a crime solving priest and his spunky sidekick nun are ludicrous.
    He changed his name for no apparent reason.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He was, undoubtedly, one of the greatest minds of the 20th century.
    He was considered an expert on the widely varying philosophies of Thomas Aquinas, Jacques Maritain, and Soren Kierkegaard.
    He was also considered an expert on ethics and has written textbooks for teaching Latin.
    He taught at Notre Dame for over fifty years!
    He also taught in Rome, Belgium, and at Oxford.
    His students have also repeatedly described him as warm and friendly.
    He had a wonderful speaking voice.
