Why he might be annoying:

    He established a prison network throughout Phnom Penh, where prisoners were interrogated, tortured, executed, used for 'medical experiments', and bled dry for transfusions for wounded soldiers.
    Tuol Sleng's prisoners consist of government officials of the Lon Nol regime, intellectuals, religious figures, and suspected traitors within the Communist party.
    He had prisoners executed after interrogating them.
    Many of Tuol Sleng's prisoners were foreigners who were trapped in the country when it fell to the Khmer Rouge or were picked up at sea by the navy, and none survived.
    He established a vast archive of prison records, mugshots, and extracted 'confessions'.
    His real name is also spelled as Kaing Guek Eav or Kaing Kek Iev.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He was known to be a child prodigy at school.
    He loved mathematics, which he taught before joining the Khmer Rouge.
    His former students praised him as a good teacher.
    He was imprisoned and tortured by Norodom Sihanouk's police at the Prey Sar prison. (1968-1970)
    An attack on his home killed his wife. (1995)
    He worked as an aid worker and lay pastor after his wife's murder and subsequent conversion to Christianity.
    Unlike his fellow Khmer Rouge leaders, he expressed remorse over his heinous crimes as evidence by his weeping and plea for forgiveness when taken to the scene of his crimes. (February 2008)
