According to legend, it was founded by Hercules.
It was conquered by the Visigoths (4th century AD), Moors (8th century) and Franks (801).
Its Olympic Stadium was originally built for a 'People's Olympics' that were cancelled when the Spanish Civil War broke out (1936).
Over a thousand civilians were killed when Italian planes bombed the city (March 16-18, 1938).
Its Sagrada Familia cathedral was begun in 1882 and is scheduled (as of 2008) for completion in 2026.

Why Barcelona, Spain might not be annoying:

It has a mild Mediterranean climate.
Its buildings designed by Antoni Gaudi were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Its Cosmocaixa science museum was named European Museum of the Year (2006).
It is home to museums dedicated to Pablo Picasso and Joan Miro.
It received the Royal Institute of British Architects' Gold Medal, the first time a city, rather than an individual architect, was honored (1997).
