Why he might be annoying:

He wrote an advice column titled 'All That Zazz.'
He said being an advice columnist was 'a girly profession.'
When his daughter's homecoming date backed out, he wrote a column about it. ('My daughter was not thrilled. And the boy was not thrilled.')

Why he might not be annoying:

He entered a Chicago Sun-Times contest to select writers to replace Ann Landers because he thought he could get a good story about the competition, and ended up beating out 12,000 entrants to become one of the two co-winners (1987).
When he was asked if he was mature enough to write an advice column, he quipped 'I'm 28, but I have the wisdom a 29-year-old.'
He received the Will Rogers Humanitarian Award for running a program that benefited 47,000 disadvantaged children in Chicago (2000).
'The Last Lecture' was on the New York Times best-seller list for over two years.
When Giffords and Kelly were interviewing potential collaborators for their memoirs, he was the only one to start off by asking Giffords how she was feeling.
The Washington Post wrote that his writing gets to you in 'the place in the heart you thought had been plaqued over by snark but apparently still beats out a faint pitter-patter of hope.'
