The Resume
(circa 544 BC-circa 496 BC)
Born in State of Wu, China
Author of 'The Art of War' (6th century BC)
Why he might be annoying
A second century BC biography (by Qian Sima) was the only surviving source of information on his life.
His famed military treatise was self-titled (‘Sun Zi’)— a common practice in pre-Qin-dynasty China.
Following the conquest of Chu (a powerful state during the Spring and Autumn Period), he disappeared silently. This left his date of death a mystery.
Only since the early 1700s has 'The Art of War' been translated into European languages.
Paris Hilton was seen with a copy of 'The Art of War'!
Why he might not be annoying
His name loosely means ‘Master Sun.’
He was regarded as a contemporary of Confucius.
He based successful war strategy on an ever-changing subjective and physical environment instead of a to-do list in a controlled environment.
His ‘bing fa,’ or principle for using forces et al, became the philosophical basis for Asian martial arts.
Despite his military background, he was a peaceful and tranquil man.
He was able to transform nearly 200 court women into trained warriors in a single season.
