The Resume

    (circa 1965- )
    Born in United States
    Resided in Savannah, Missouri
First-grade teacher at Edison Elementary School in St. Joseph, Missouri
Received media attention after Alferd Williams became a student in her class to learn reading skills (2008)

Why she might be annoying:

The majority of the students at Edison Elementary where she taught were from single parent or low income families.
She learned that Alferd Williams could not read after asking him if he had read a note intended for one of her student's parents, assuming he was the student's grandfather and guardian.
When she suggested local adult educational resources, Williams was not interested due to his history of having impatient adults trying to teach him.
At first, she was insecure about teaching an adult after Williams asked that she tutor him.
Some people suggested that Williams' presence in her class with young children was inappropriate and unethical.

Why she might not be annoying:

She referred to her students as 'friends.'
Williams desired her to teach him reading because he considered her patient and encouraging.
At her encouragement, her tutoring sessions evolved from two hours per school day lessons to Williams' daily participation in her class (September 2005).
She referred Williams' need for books to a local resident who wanted to be charitable with a gift card from Oprah Winfrey.
She was grateful for the benefits from Williams' media attention, which included a fund raising effort to build him a home.
Sponsors from Ellen DeGeneres's talk show donated $2500.00 and laptop computers to Edison Elementary.
Her involvement with Williams earned her the school district's Teacher of the Year award, along with a Congressional Record.
She described Williams as a perfect and inspirational student.
