The Resume

    (January 2, 1913-May 14, 2004)
Born in Ightham, England, United Kingdom
Birth name is Joan Boniface Winnifrith
Acted in 'How Green Was My Valley,' 'Two Rode Together,' 'Fort Apache,' 'Bedlam,' 'Hangmen Also Die!' 'The Sound of Music,' 'Whatever Happened to Baby Jane,' and 'What Can I Do'
Made frequent guest spots on 'Robert Montgomery Presents,' 'The Ford Theatre Hour,' 'Zorro,' 'Gunsmoke,' Alfred Hitchcock Presents,' 'Kraft Television Theatre,' 'Armstrong Circle Theatre,' 'Wagon Train' 'General Electric Theater,' '20th Century Fox Presents,' and 'Perry Mason'
Best known for her role as Lila Quartermaine on 'General Hospital'

Why she might be annoying:

She married three times and divorced twice.
Alfred Hitchcock gave her away at her second wedding.
She had a body of work spanning over fifty years, but she is mainly remembered for her recurring role as the matriarch, Lila Quartermaine, in 'General Hospital.'
She portrayed one of the nuns from Maria Von Trapp's convent in the overrated musical, 'The Sound of Music.'
She invented a fictitious 'Irish grandfather' to impress John Ford and obtain a role in 'How Green Was My Valley.'
    She had a bland, generic-sounding screen-name.
She tended to go through hair colors.
She was nicknamed 'Queen of the Quota Quickies'

Why she might not be annoying:

She was paralyzed from the waist-down in a 1983 car accident but continued to work steadily for the next twenty years.
She was unnecessarily fired from 'General Hospital' when production came under new management in 2003, outraging both fans and cast/crew (she was ninety at the time).
It is believed that her firing weakened her will to live, as she died less than a year after her firing.
She was literally caught in the middle of the Bette Davis-Joan Crawford feud during filming of 'Whatever Happened to Baby Jane' (her trailer was in between theirs on the set).
She is fondly remembered for being a figure of warmth as the object of young Roddy McDowall's affections in 'How Green Was My Valley.'
She remained close with her 'My Valley' co-stars; specifically her female co-stars, who formed 'The Daughters of the Green Valley,' meeting every year on the anniversary of the first day of shooting.
Maureen O'Hara named her only daughter after Lee's character in 'My Valley.'
She received a Soapy Award for Favorite Woman in a Mature Role for 'General Hospital' (1983).
She received a Soap Opera Digest Award for Outstanding Actress in a Supporting Role for 'General Hospital' (1998).
She was the goddaughter of both Arthur Conan Doyle and Sybil Thorndike.
She did an overseas tour with the USO during WWII, entertaining Allied troops in North Africa, Iran, and Sicily, and ended up marrying the pilot of the tour's plane.
She was one of John Ford's three favorite actresses to work with, along with Katharine Hepburn and Maureen O'Hara.
