Baseball Player

The Resume

    (September 2, 1933-June 23, 1994)
    Born in Collierville, Tennessee
First baseman for the New York Yankees (1955,1958-58), Kansas City Athletics (1960-61), Baltimore Orioles (1961-62) and New York Mets (1962-63)
    .237 career batting average
    53 home runs

Why he might be annoying:

He epitomized the hapless ’62 Mets, who lost 120 games for a modern record.
He made 17 errors and his fielding percentage of .981 would not be equaled by another major league first baseman until Cesar Cedeno tied it in 1979.
When the Mets held a birthday party for him, he asked why there wasn’t a cake. Manager Casey Stengel replied, ‘We were afraid you’d drop it.’
He hit a triple against the Cubs and was called out for failing to touch second base. Stengel came out to argue the call only to have his first base coach tell him, ‘Don’t bother, Casey. He missed first, too.’ (June 17, 1962)
When a party in his honor was held at an Italian restaurant, he arrived late and was unable to find a seat, so he ate across the street in a diner.

Why he might not be annoying:

He led the minor league American Association in home runs and RBIs three consecutive seasons (1955-57).
He became a fan favorite for maintaining a sense of humor about his abilities.
He appeared in a series of Miller Lite commercials, commenting ‘If I do for Lite what I did for baseball, I’m afraid their sales will go down.’
    He was left handed.
