The Resume

    (May 5, 1883-May 24, 1950)
Born in Colchester, England, United Kingdom
Served in the Boer War and World War I
British Commander in Chief in the Middle East (1939-41) and India (1941-43) during World War II
    Promoted to Field Marshall (1943)
    Viceroy of India (1943-47)

Why he might be annoying:

The long, awkward pauses in his conversation prompted King George VI to call him 'the oyster.'
General Rommel's Afrika Corps drove his forces out of Libya.
He had a knack for losing the prime minister's confidence, with Winston Churchill replacing him as Middle East Commander and Clement Attlee replacing him as Viceroy of India.

Why he might not be annoying:

He graduated from Sandhurst Military Academy at the top of his class.
He lost an eye during the Second Battle of Ypres in World War I.
Despite being heavily outnumbered, he was on the verge of overrunning the Italian forces in Libya when he was ordered to stop his advance and divert some of his troops to Greece (1941).
Erwin Rommel respected his abilities and carried a copy of Wavell's 'Generals and Generalship' throughout the North Africa campaign.
He published a popular anthology of poetry and included one of his own poems as the last entry.
