Politician

The Resume

    (1961-July 12, 2011)
Born in Karz (Kandahar Province), Afghanistan
Birth name is Ahmad Wali Karzay
    Elder of the Popalzai tribe
Served as Chairman of the Kandahar Provincial Council (2005- )
Half-brother of former Afghan President Hamid Karzai
Assassinated by one of his close bodyguards, Sardar Mohammad, on 12 July 2011

Why he might be annoying:

    His nickname is AWK.
Its hard to argue he position of power wasn't based on nepotism.
He may have orchestrated voter fraud during the August 2009 Afghani presidential elections.
His Wikipedia page's content has been hotly debated over and re-edited.
He was called a drug warlord mired in the corruption of the opium trade.
He was accused by the New York Times of being a paid collaborator with the CIA since 2000 (Oct. 2009).
He was accused of operating a CIA-bankrolled Afghan paramilitary force to conduct raids in the Kandahar province.
His connections to the drug trade were reinforced when evidence surfaced that he lived, rent-free, in a house owned by known drug traffickers.
He released a weak denial of the charges which failed to convince his detractors, saying 'I am not a drug dealer, I never was and I never will be. I am a victim of vicious politics' (Oct. 2009).
He was seen as such an embarrassing liability to his brother that the US Ambassador in Kabul tried (and failed) to angle an overseas diplomatic position for him in 2007.
Even when the news of his assassination broke, media outlets didn't publicly mourn him. For example, The Guardian's obiturary called him 'in many ways the personification of modern-day Afghanistan – corrupt, treacherous, lawless, paradoxical, subservient and charming.'
The Taliban tried to take credit for his assassination by his own bodyguard, but several sources indicated that it was unlikely, mainly because they have been known to claim responsibility for attacks they had nothing to do with, if only to strike fear into their enemies.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was Hamid Karzai's own Roger Clinton.
He spoke fluent English, Pashto, Dari, Hindi, and Urdu.
The BBC called him 'a gallant defender of Pashtun rights.'
He was praised for utilizing his connections/links to the President to offer a peaceful alternative to the violence served up by the Taliban.
He had survived a total of 9 assassination attempts by Taliban militants.
He may have been using the CIA-funded paramilitary force to combat Taliban groups in and around Kandahar.
One of his bodyguards was killed by unknown attackers with rockets & machine-guns, on a convoy travelling to Kabul (May 2009).
His brother spoke at his funeral, saying 'my message for [the Taliban] is that my countryman, my brother, stop killing your own people. It's easy to kill and everyone can do it, but the real man is the one who can save people's lives.'
