    (January 6, 1832-January 23, 1883)
    Born in Strasbourg, France
    Full name: Paul Gustave Dore
Incredibly prolific and popular artist most well known for his illustrations of the Bible and the work of John Milton, Edgar Allan Poe and Dante
He died far too young at age 51, possibly due to overwork.
His family basically signed him over to his publisher at age 15.
He moved from one style to another every five years.
Although talented as a sculptor and an oil painter, his distinctive black & white literary illustrations overshadow the rest of his work.
He started drawing at age 5, made his first sale at 15, and was the highest paid artist in France at 16.
He was incredibly well paid making as much as 30,000 pounds for illustrating a single volume.
His illustrations of Poe, the Bible, and Dante have literally achieved iconic status.
He drew 10,000 engravings, 400 oil paintings, and made numerous statues among other works. That averages to more than a complete work of art per day for his entire professional life!
It is literally impossible to find anyone who said a bad word about him personally.
He never had an art lesson in his life.
