    It was founded as an illegal settlement on land that was granted to the Lakota tribe.
    Due to the settlers squatting on the land, the land disputes had to be settled through the Supreme Court.
    It was notorious for its lawlessness during the Gold Rush era.
    It earned further notoriety as the site where Wild Bill Hickok was shot dead.
    It was the site of a smallpox epidemic (1876).
    The entire town was burnt to the ground (September 26, 1879).
    It experienced a second mass inferno that nearly destroyed the entire town (September 1959).
    Its historic Syndacite Building burnt to the ground (1987).
    It went through a significant population drop following the collapse of the mining industry.
    Since the late 1980's, its economy heavily relies on tourism.
    Its close proximity to the city of Lead has people calling it the Deadwood-Lead twin city region.

Why Deadwood, South Dakota might not be annoying:

    It was the site of the Black Hills Gold Rush of the 1870s.
    It had a population of 25,000 people at the peak of the Gold Rush.
    It attracted many key Western figures such as Wyatt Earp, Calamity Jane and Wild Bill Hickok to the town.
    The entire city was declared a historic site (1961).
    Many of the historic 19th century architecture along Main Street still remains in tact.
    It evolved into a prosperous community following the demise of the gold panning industry.
    In an odd turn of events, the loss of the Syndicate Building sparked an interest in becoming a tourist town.
    It was the first small community in the United States that was allowed to keep its gambling revenues as a way to maintain its historic assets.
    Most people are familar with the town as a result of the HBO TV series of the same name.
    It is one of the main tourist towns to check out if you are planning to visit nearby Mount Rushmore.
    It is home to the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, which takes place along the town's historic Main Street during the second week in August.
