He married five times.
When he was singing with Gus Arnheim's orchestra at the Coconut Grove, Arnheim had to become his legal guardian to permit him to travel out of state (he was 13).
His acting usually came off as stiff and bland, limiting his filmography to isolated musical numbers.
His career suffered at the end of the Big Band era.
Although a household name in Latin America/Mexico, he is now an afterthought in the US.
He admitted to celebrating in the streets of Havana when Castro overthrew the Batista government (he later expressed regret).
He is still hotly criticized by his Latino fans for changing his name to appeal to English-speaking listeners.
He said: 'I'm not Chicano. I'm Mexican American. First I'm Mexican because my mother and dad are Mexican and I'm Mexican, and I'm American cause I was born here ... I'm not a Chicano, you know? I just didn't like that word. It stuck with me. I don't like it even today. I'm sorry, I don't like it ... Just don't like the sound.'

His cover of 'Besame Mucho' sold a million copies and hit #10 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Songwriter Consuelo Velazquez credited him with popularizing 'Besame Mucho' worldwide (it is one of the most recorded Mexican songs in history).
