Why he might be annoying:

He was dropped as Vice President and replaced by Andrew Johnson to balance the Lincoln ticket.
He only served as governor of Maine for one month and resigned.
He had to stay home until he turned twenty-one to support his mother and follow his father's will.
He did not openly support the abolition of slavery for political reasons.
His memoirs are written by his grandson.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was named after Hannibal Barca, the great Carthaginian general.
He left the Democratic party over their support of slavery.
He was physically fit and an active reader.
He estimated at one point that over one third of the Senate was drunk, and when Senator Henry S. Foote pulled a pistol out on the Senate floor, he wrote to a comrade, 'Don't you think the American Senate is a dignified body!!!!!!!'
He was one of the first Republicans to become governor of a state.
He might have been a better president than the bumbling Andrew Johnson had he remained on the Lincoln ticket.
