The Resume

Won Olympic gold medals in 400 meter freestyle (2012), 1500 meter freestyle (2012) and 200 meter freestyle (2016)
Won silver medals in 200 meter freestyle (2012) and 400 meter freestyle (2016)

Why he might be annoying:

He was detained seven days and fined after a traffic collision in which he was found to have been driving without a license (November 3, 2013).
He was suspended for three months by the Chinese Swimming Association after he tested positive for the stimulant trimetazidine (May, 2014).
During an out of competition doping test at his home, he and his security staff smashed a container of blood sample vials with a hammer (September 4, 2018).
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ordered him banned from competition for eight years over the incident (February 28, 2020).

Why he might not be annoying:

He became the first male swimmer to earn medals at the Olympics or World Championships in freestyle races at every distance from 200 meters to 1500 meters.
He had been prescribed trimetazidine to treat heart palpitations, and claimed to be unaware that the World Anti-Doping Agency had added the drug to their banned substances list four months earlier.
FINA initially declined to punish him over the September, 2018, incident, on the grounds that the doping control agent had refused to provide credentials when Yang asked for them, which meant (in FINA’s opinion) that the blood had not been collected legally, making the destruction of the vials a non-violation of the doping rules.
The CAS ruled he could keep the medals he won between September, 2018, and their decision.
