The Resume

    (May 31, 1978- )
    Born in Equatorial Guinea
Competed in the 100 meter freestyle at the Sydney Olympics (2000)
    Nicknamed 'Eric the Eel'

Why he might be annoying:

He was able to compete only through a wild card draw that allowed athletes from developing countries entry to the Olympics without meeting the minimum qualifications.
Midway through his race, commentators seriously worried that he was drowning.
His time of 1:52.72 was more than twice the winning time in the 100 meters and longer than even the time of the winner of the 200 meters.
A visa snafu kept him from returning for the Athens Olympics (2004).

Why he might not be annoying:

Before Sydney he had never even seen an Olympic-size pool, having trained in a hotel's 20-meter pool.
Despite his slow time, he did win his heat, since his competitors were disqualified for false starts.
He received a standing ovation from the crowd when he finished.
By 2004, he had gotten his time down to a respectable 57 seconds.
